Dear Evelyn,

Dana Greene asked me to tell you and others of our pilgrimageto the places in Italy and England that you loved and lived in.

Ever since I read in Dana's book, Artist of the Infinite Life, that your grave in Hampstead was neglected and obscured by grass and brambles, I
have wanted to go there, tend and prune the site and pray with you.

On Saturday, June 24, 2000, Dana, Donna Osthaus, our pilgrim guide and seven other of your friends and I did go there. We laid a dozen white
flowers on your grave, and I said, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Even so, said the spirit, for they rest from their labors"

We also saw where you labored under the bombing, where you studied, wrote and worshipped. We were blessed by the entire pilgrimage.

We"entered Italy" at its most marvelous gate, Florence. To me, the pure vision of Fra Angelico os the pure virgin receiving her Annunciation is
worth all the rest of the glories of the renaissance. You too loved the "best of the medieval spirit" in the Spanish Chapel, and we shared your
view of that also.

We shared the mystery and courage of St. Catherine at her home in Sienna, and then to Assisi: Assisi: the center of everything Franciscan:
joy, humor, devotion, courtesy, and beauty. An eveing procession to honor Santa Chiara (Clare) led by herald trumpeters in medieval costume.
We visited Cortona, Perugia, Gubbio, and Spello, all with their own treasures of art and faith and legend.

On to London. We saw your home near Kensington Palace. We stayed at a little hotel nearby and had dinner with with the pilgrims and Dana's
daughter, a student in London. A hike the next day through Hampstead where you endured the bombing in the basement and worked and
prayed for peace. And it was there we made our tribute at your last , first real home.

A long ride from London to Pleshey: that village in Essex is the essential England: two pubs, The Anglican Church, quaint homes homes, farms,
a ruined castle and moat, and the Retreat House, the goal of our pilgrimage.

The Rev. Lindsay Spendlove led us in retreat. Sweet silence, time to be alone together, and inwardly digest all our impressions. Dans's stepping
backward meditation on her choice of hagiography made all our footsteps conscious. You have taught us that part of our spiritual goal is to
awaken consciousness.

My dear Evelyn, I am grateful for all you have taught and still teach. You have opened my eyes, guided my feet, disciplined my faith and
fulfilled my dreams. And I am grateful that you have so many wonderful friends that have become my friends too.

Faithfully,

John Kimball
